Beaver Dam Creek

The Newton County Board of Commissioners contracted with Georgia Development Partners to construct a Priority I Stream Restoration in the City of Covington. A new 855 linear foot channel was excavated and enhanced with 3 log vanes and a stone cross vane, creating distinct riffle and pool features. Large sections of toe wood were installed on the far banks of the bends, fortifying these areas against peak flow events and creating ample new macroinvertebrate habitat. The former encised streambed was abandoned and filled and vegetated with 2,200 plants to create over 2 acres of new wetlands. 1,900 square yards of Bio-D matting were supplemented with 342 Black Willow live stakes and 240 other saplings to help stabilize the new stream banks. Invasive plant species were removed and 1,000 other native riparian trees and understory plantings were installed to complete this ecosystem restoration.
