Ocmulgee Heritage Trail – Phase I

In 2012, Bibb County awarded Georgia Development Partners the opportunity to construct Phase I of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail system. This phase brought the trail through historic Rose Hill Cemetery (c. 1840), down through sensitive wetland areas and across a tributary to the Ocmulgee River to a 400 sf observation deck with built in bench seating. GDP converted 2,400 linear feet of an old cemetery service road into a 12' multi-purpose asphalt trail, complete with 17 retractable bollards, trail markings, and signage. The wetland area was sensitively bridged with 310' of elevated boardwalk that was 8' in width. GDP completed the project by installing new brick walled ADA accessibility ramps into the historic cemetery offices. 370' of decorative handrail was needed to complete the ramps. Over $15,000 was credited back to the owner when GDP value engineered a drainage basin by replacing the concrete spec with a grassy swale that utilized the spoils of the trail cut. The firm also respectfully scheduled its work around 2-3 internments a day in the cemetery, and they created a new access road to a sod farm and memorial garden at no cost to the owner when the design of the boardwalk was found to conflict with access to these areas.
