Southern Polytechnic State University Hornet Drive And Main Entry

Southern Polytechnic State University selected GDP through a competitive interview process to serve as Construction Manager at-Risk for a transportation and pedestrian traffic enhancement, a visually enhanced entryway project. Georgia Development Partners demolished 400 linear feet of a major campus roadway artery and realigned it in a new roadbed with curbing. The project involved adding 205' of 15" storm pipe and over 1,100 linear feet of new 6' sidewalks. A raised and pavered crosswalk was built to mitigate traffic speeds and to protect pedestrians at a key access point on campus. GDP also reconditioned an old parking lot into campus greenspace and resurfaced and expanded one of the main lots on campus. Extensive traffic control and frequent construction notifications were necessary to maintain campus safety and mitigate impacts to the daily campus rhythms. A total of 194' of tiered brick walls were constructed on each side of the entry and infilled with extensive ground cover, 6" caliper trees, and irrigation. Paver fields were cut into the existing asphalt of the drive aisles, and approximately 400 feet of new sidewalk and pavers were constructed within the pedestrian corridors. Electrical infrastructure was expanded on the site to power new pedestrian, street, and wall lighting, and new identity signage was installed along the wall to provide better visibility from the adjacent roadway.
